Social media in younger generations
Social media in younger generations
We all know that social media can be a toxic place for young people specifically, but there is a new bill that would allow parents to sue platforms for being addicting to children and causing harm. This bill was created to make these large platforms responsible for making their apps non addictive for minors. This is an interesting bill because we all know that these apps are extremely addictive. Look at tik tok for example, on this app you can make short videos that only keep the person's attention for a short amount of time. This means people can scroll for hours before realizing they have wasted their time. This is what the bill is trying to stop, at least that is how I interpret the proposed bill. Social media creates this world of fake image, and young people think that everything that they see on there is actually real life. However, most of the time the people that post on social media only post what they want you to see, which makes it difficult for minors to differentiate between real and fake posts. This leads to them thinking they are not good enough, which has led to a rise in youth depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. This bill is trying to combat this because this type of social media consumption is not healthy for anyone at any age. On the other hand, isn't it the job of these companies to make their apps as addicting as possible? That's the goal for video games, for example. They want to make them as addictive as possible so that people will spend more time/spend more money on their game. It is the same concept for app creators. They want to make something so addictive that people can not put it down. This is a tough one for me because I can see both sides of the argument. Would love to hear yalls input.
